Full Moon March 19 2011.

The Supper Moon. Taken from good old downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

I did not drag out a telescope to image this full moon. I wanted an image with a little more magic, spiritual felling. A full moon on the spring equinox has a little more magic and fun for me then a moon that appears a little bigger then normal. But, there was both which was double magic. Plus there was a thin overcast which gave the glow around the moon.

The moon moves close to our planet every 19 years. Close encounter.

It take 9.5 years to move out from our planet where the the moon appears smaller. Then in another 9.5 years the moon slowly moves back to a close orbit to use where the moon appears to be slightly larger. Round trip 19 years. So this image was taken on the closes the moon will be in this 19 years cycle.

If you missed seeing this larger looking moon, no problem. Just go take a look next full moon which is in about 3 and a half weeks. The moon movies so slow, very little change in size can be seen from full moon to full moon. A change in size can be seen if you where to watch for the 9.5 years it take the moon to move out to its most distance from us.
