Description
The Great Orion Nebula or M42. Photographed this last November 14th 2012.
This is a combined image of some 44 images. 30 seconds exposures stacked with software making a total exposure of 22 Minutes.
The important side note here is this image was taken with telescope Optics that are over 60 years old. From the serial number on this scope I am thinking it is 63 years old. The optics has never been touched except for one cleaning. 6-inch Edmund Telescope. f/6. Orion SkyView Pro Mount. Unguided. Yes there is a slight declination drift which was do to a slight out of north polar alignment. I had the mount perfectly aligned which was proven the night before but I must have bump as I putting the optical tube on the mount the night of this image and cause the mount to be ever so off alignment. Bummer.
A second note and a very important note is: This image was made from my backyard from a very light polluted area of Louisville, Ky. Two block from J-Town Hight School and several large shopping centers who of course keep there lights on all night.
Yes a much higher quality image can be produced from a true dark sight but I wanted to push a bad sight just to see how good an image could be made. Other then the very slight miss polar alignment this is about as good as can be made I think.
